Appleton Lepidoptera Photo
Index for 2017
The below photos
were taken by the author in a suburban yard on West Summer Street in Appleton,
WI (Outagamie County) (Google Earth figures). The habitat includes a variety of trees,
gardens, and lawns. The closest forested
habitat is along the Fox River about 1.2 miles to the south (mesic to hydric
hardwoods). Fields, mesic to hydric
hardwood forest, and prairie planting occur just over 2 miles to the west. Forested and open wetlands occur just over 3
miles to the northwest. Xeric uplands do
not occur in the vicinity.
I
have collected five species from this subfamily in Wisconsin but only two of
them in Outagamie County. Cliniodes ostreonalis occurs in the
Canadian Life Zone (Forest County), and Microtheoris
ophionalis and Eustixia pupula occur in southern Wisconsin (Waukesha County). Two species occur irregularly and uncommonly
in suburban Appleton: Mimoschinia
rufofascialis and Hellula
rogatalis. These species are
probably dispersers or strays rather than residents in suburban Appleton.
Numbers
in [ ] are from the Hodges et al. (1983) checklist of the Lepidoptera of
America North of Mexico.
Odontiinae
Mimoschinia
rufofascialis [4826]
Three were found in
suburban Appleton in 2016, but none in 2017-2018. This species is usually found in
xeric grasslands,
such dry prairie (examples: Muralt Bluff, Green County; Chiwaukee Prairie,
Kenosha County).

At least one
