Appleton Lepidoptera Photo
Index for 2017
The below photos
were taken by the author in a suburban yard on West Summer Street in Appleton,
WI (Outagamie County) (Google Earth figures). The habitat includes a variety of trees,
gardens, and lawns. The closest forested
habitat is along the Fox River about 1.2 miles to the south (mesic to hydric
hardwoods). Fields, mesic to hydric
hardwood forest, and prairie planting occur just over 2 miles to the west. Forested and open wetlands occur just over 3
miles to the northwest. Xeric uplands do
not occur in the vicinity.
All
photos of live specimens are voucher specimens collected after the photo was
taken. Not all species recorded have
been identified.
Phycitinae
is the most diverse and difficult of the pyralid subfamilies in suburban
Appleton. At least 48 species were found
from 2016-2017, including a couple only identified to genus. Many of the species require magnification to
identify, and selective strategic sampling in the field is difficult because so
many species appear extremely similar to the unaided eye. The following checklist was produced
primarily from spread specimens from 2017; series of unspread specimens have
yet to be studied. Vitula edmandsii is the most common species and has been collected
from May-October, but numerous other species are of similar size and coloration
when viewed with the unaided eye.
Thus
far I have yet to study most of my Wisconsin Phycitinae specimens collected
outside of suburban Appleton. However, I
have collected at least the following additional species in Wisconsin: Acrobasis indigenella, Acrobasis
tricolorella, Acrobasis betulella, Etiella species, Salebriaria engeli, Sciota rubescentella, Sciota dammersi, Dioryctria
resinosella, and Elasmopalpus
lignosellus.
Numbers
in [ ] are from the Hodges et al. (1983) checklist of the Lepidoptera of
America North of Mexico.
