The following
photos were taken at night with a Cannon PowerShot SX50 camera in TV mode
(shutter speed priority) with the camera's flash, unless otherwise
indicated. Shutter speed, flash
intensity, distance to subject, and zoom varied among the photos. The photos were resized in ACDSee by setting
actual print size to 7.5 inches, but the photos are otherwise unedited.
These photos were taken during a
Lepidoptera biodiversity inventory conducted by Hugo Kons Jr. during October of
2016. All of the species represented
below are documented with voucher specimens on each date they were encountered
in addition to the photos. Far more
species were recorded from specimens during the bioblitz than were
photographed; with the photography I concentrated on moths on a bait trail of
rotten banana/brown sugar bait (see Kons and Borth (2007)
for a description of bait trails).
Some of these species cannot be definitively identified from the below
photos but were identified after the specimens in the photos were
collected. This web page is not intended
as an identification source, rather, these photos are a compliment to the voucher
specimens and were primarily used to document feeding behavior at an artificial
food source. This web page presents some
of this documentation as well as examples of the capabilities of this camera
model for this type of photography.
