APPENDIX G: External Structural Characters
of Florida Polistinae
Version 2018.1
External structural
characters for identifying Polistes
rubiginosus, P. hirsuticornis, P. parametricus, and P. dorsalis are from Buck et al. (2008).
Click on the thumbnails to view
individual figures, or scroll down for the full set of figures
sequentially.
Note:
Buck et al. (2012) stated some P.
hirsuticornis have a the pronotal fovea present as a small superficial
depression and a single female had a small but deep fovea. All eight P.
hirsuticornis (or species near) we collected in Florida lack the fovea.
Note:
Buck et al. (2012) stated that in P.
parametricus the propodeal oirifice is usually wide and gradually narrowing
dorsally, but is sometimes abruptly narrowing as in P. hirsuticornis. Of the
seven additional specimens we examined, six are like the former and one like
the latter.
